Mack Maine On Young Money: “The Crew Can Only Be As Big As The Leader”

Last night I got my hands on The Source’s October/November Power 30 issue with Birdman/Mack Main & The Black Eyed Peas gracing the cover. For the cover feature(s) Maurice G. Garland sits down with Mack Maine to discuss his role under the Young Money/Cash Money umbrella. In the excerpt below, Mack Maine explains how making sacrifices in regards to his career have landed him and his team in the forefront of hip-hop.

Did you ever want to leave Young Money at some point before becoming the president?

Sometimes I call myself the sacrificial lamb. There were times when I could have easily left. But I was born into this family. Career-wise, yeah, at one time I had a big spotlight and people wanted me. As far as people who left Young Money because it wasn’t big enough for them? The crew can only be as big as the leader, so we had to make sure Wayne got to the level that we needed him to be. Some people didn’t stick around because they didn’t see the vision.
